"Torch of Peace" (Kashmir Awareness Campaign during 2012 Olympic Games in London) Public Event · By JKLF

  • 93 Leytonstone Road, London, E15 1JA (Car Park)
  • Athletes from over two hundred countries are taking part in one of the largest sporting events-the Olympic Games- in London as a manifestation of universal goodwill and fraternal relations amongst the nations and Peoples of the world. Millions of people throughout the world however continue to suffer and endure oppression at the hands of some of the states represented at the Games.

17 million people of Kashmir are one such glaring example of suffering and oppression at the hands of the Indian State. Over 700,000 Indian troops are actively deployed in the Indian held part of the forcibly divided state of Kashmir, who openly indulges in massive abuse of human rights, rapes, destruction of property and disappearance of innocent youths.

More recently, thousands of unmarked graves were discovered in many areas of Kashmir as reported by Amnesty International. Thousand of Kashmiri people are still languishing in prisons across India. The revelation of these unmarked graves has increased the fear of their whereabouts.

The Torch of Peace campaign is to high light the plight of Kashmiri people (without disturbing the enjoyment of the games) and expose the state oppression by the huge occupying army of so called largest democracy in the world-India which continues to deny to the people of Jammu Kashmir, their internationally recognised, inherent and inalienable right of self determination.

The Torch of Peace is also to expose the indifference and failure of the big' powers' and the United Nations to secure the FREEDOM for the people of Kashmir which the world body promised the people of Jammu Kashmir.

The-launch of the Torch of Peace is a reminder to the World Conscience of the continued enslavement and subjugation and forced division of 17 million people and their land between India and Pakistan.

You are therefore cordially requested to attend this poignant and its launch on Wednesday, 1st August 2012 Time: 2pm at

High court helps Muslim girl to live with her Hindu husband

MADURAI: Coming to the aid of a Muslim girl who alleged threats from her family members after she married a Hindu, Madras high courtbench here directed them not to interfere in her life as she was a major. Disposing of a petition by 21-year old K Fathima seeking police protection, Justice K Venkataraman said the parents should not interfere and precipitate as the girl was a major.

The girl, an engineering student in Tirunelveli, was in love with her collegemate S Kannan and both got married at the famous Lord Muruga temple in Palani in Dindigul district on June 29 despite strong opposition from her family. She claimed to have received many threatening phone calls from her relatives and also from a fundamentalist organisation for having married a Hindu youth.

The judge had summoned the girl, her husband as well as her parents to know the facts. Fathima told the judge she feared that she might become a victim of honour killing and sought protection. When questioned by the Judge, her parents insisted on taking her back with them but budged as the girl was adamant on living with her husband, who filed an affidavit promising to register the marriage.

The Judge recorded the undertaking as well as the presence of a police official who stood witness to the entire episode and let the girl go with her husband. He also said the police could intervene only if any complaint was lodged by either of the parties making out a cognizable offence and not otherwise.

Delhi blames neighbouring states for power crisis

New Delhi: After hours of blackout due to a breakdown of the Northern Grid early on Monday, power supply was restored to almost 80 per cent areas of Delhi by noon, officials said. Delhi blamed Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh for overdrawing power that caused the grid's collapse.
"At 2:33 a.m. the frequency was very low at Northern Grid and it collapsed. Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were drawing between 2,500 and 3,000 mega-watts," Delhi's Power Minister Haroon Yusuf told reporters here.
A failure in the Northern Grid at 2.32 a.m. affected supply to seven northern states, including Delhi. Officials said the failure took place somewhere near Agra, causing the entire system to trip.

Power supply was also hit in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir.
"Power supply has been restored nearly 80 percent of Delhi," an official from Delhi power supplier BSES told IANS.
Yusuf also said by 4 a.m. electricity was restored at Delhi airport, the Prime Minister's House, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
"In the past ten years, this was an unprecedented power failure and we will make sure that such outages do not occur in future," Yusuf said.
Train services on the 190-km Metro network weaving through the length and breath of the national capital were affected due to the failure of the Northern Grid.
However, all Delhi Metro services could be restored only after two hours around 8.45 a.m. No Metro train ran from 6 a.m., when the services normally begin, till 7 a.m. Only 25 percent of the services were restored by 7 a.m.
"Services in all the six lines became normal by 8.45 a.m. We are receiving hydel power from Bhutan on priority basis," a Delhi Metro official said. He added that Delhi Metro was amongst the emergency services, including the Prime Minister's HOuse and AIIMS, that were provided power.
According to union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, nearly 60 percent of electricity supply was restored by early morning and efforts were going on to restore the power supply "on a war footing".
Northern Railways, Delhi Metro and other vital services such as water treatment plants were affected.
The power outage led to an acute water problem across Delhi with taps running dry.
Power failure put the traffic signals on a blink, causing massive traffic jams during peak office hours.
V.V. Sharma, general manager of Power System Operation Corporation Limited (PSOCL), told IANS that power restoration work was going on and the situation was now "good" in most states.
He said a three-member committee has been appointed to look into the reasons of the power failure, and details would be given once the committee gives its report.
"The trouble resulted in power outage in the entire northern region, but for parts of Badarpur in south Delhi, Narora and Simbhauli in Uttar Pradesh and Bhinma in Rajasthan," a statement from PSOCL said.
According to a Northern Railway spokesperson, nearly 100 trains were disrupted but traffic was back to normal by 8 a.m. Around 45 local trains in Delhi were also affected.
"Power supply has resumed, but several trains are plying four-five hours late. We are holding back goods trains and giving priority to passenger trains," the spokesperson said.
"Vital services and VIP areas were first provided power, and most of the services have now been restored," a BSES official told IANS.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport functioned normally with the help of generators.

Salman Khan's fan 'committed to murder'

Mumbai: It must be flattering for our superstars when their on-screen antics inspire the real-life actions of their admirers. But here's an instance that could make any celebrity cringe. Inspired by a one-liner from his screen idol's hit film 'Wanted', a devoted fan of Salman Khan killed and robbed a courier firm employee to honour his promise of repaying a loan.
When asked by cops why he resorted to murder, he quoted the line from Khan’s blockbuster 'Wanted': ‘Maine jo ek baar commitment kar dee toh phir main apne aap ki bhi nahin sunta’.
Talha Mohammed Munaf Ansari (29), a resident of Madanpura, Nagpada, was arrested by Unit II of Crime Branch on June 20, for the murder of Jeetu Sadarangani alias Govind (22), an employee of Mamaji Courier Cargo. The ardent admirer of Khan had even met the object of his worship on the sets of 'Dabangg', where he wangled a photograph with the screen idol.

After killing the victim, Ansari grabbed over Rs 9.5 lakh in cash from him. According to police sources, the accused had amassed a huge debt, which he had promised to pay back. Motivated by the famous dialogue delivered by Khan, Ansari decided to do his screen idol’s bidding, by hook or by crook.
On June 20 around 9 am, a police team comprising Nishikant Patil, Prashant Raje, Avinash Kavthekar, Subhash Mali, HN Mishra and Pramod Shirke arrested Talha from Nagpada. The police also recovered Rs 5, 48,000 in cash from him. During investigations, Talha admitted to being inspired to commit his crime by the dialogue.
"He is a huge fan of Salman Khan. We recovered a photograph from him in which he is posing with Khan. Even when our team asked him why he killed and robbed Sadarangani, he told them ‘maine jo ek bar commitment kar di toh phir main apne aap ki bhi nahin sunta’," said an officer.
Anxious after being given an ultimatum to repay his loan, Ansari planned the robbery. On June 11 at 9.30 pm, he entered the office of Mamaji Courier Cargo at Dwaraka Bhavan, Bhuleshwar, killed Sadarangani and robbed him.
According to the police, Sadarangani, a distant relative of his employer Harish Chandani, had been working at the firm for the last seven months. He was a native of Nagpur and had been residing in Govandi.
Ansari had even damaged the telephone box. Police noticed him while scrutinising CCTV footage. Another employee of the firm has been absconding since the day of the crime and phone records have revealed that he was in touch with the accused. "We are verifying if Ansari was touch with any gang or had connections with policemen," said an officer.

CRICKET: Give Mohammad Amir a chance, says Shane Watson

Shane Watson, the Australian all-rounder, believes that the banned young Pakistani fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, deserves another chance in international cricket.
Give Mohammad Amir a chance, says Shane Watson – Cricket News Update
The 20-year-old cricketer from Gujjar Khan burst into the global arena during the ICC World T20 2009, held in England, immediately playing a huge role in his team’s title triumph.
Later on, the left-arm rookie proved his credentials in the other two formats of the game and was regarded as one of the finest young talents in present day sport.
Unfortunately, Amir, along with his fellow fast bowler, Mohammad Asif, was found involved in bowling deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s Test during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010. The two bowlers and the then captain, Salman Butt, were later banned from competitive cricket for lengthy periods of time.
Watson, who is considered to be one of the world’s leading all-rounders these days, is of the view that Amir was a teenager when he committed the mistake and the International Cricket Council (ICC) should give him the benefit of doubt because of his inexperience.
The Aussie cricketer hopes that Amir returns to international cricket sooner or later, calling him one of the best young players of the recent times.
"I probably feel for him more than anyone because he’s only a young, naive and innocent young guy. Unfortunately he’s caught up with something. but I think he deserves a chance and allowed back into international cricket after serving a ban for spot-fixing  because he's a great young talent," said Shane Watson.
Apart from Watson, a number of current and former cricketers from all across the globe hold a soft corner for the budding cricketer.
The list includes the former Indian captain, Rahul Dravid, who revealed earlier this year that he was a great fan of the left-arm fast bowler and prayed that he returns to the international fold.
"It's been disappointing as [I am] someone who loves the game, and loves watching young talent come through. We all want him to come back at some stage and I don't know whether that's. It's going to be a challenge," Dravid expressed.

Hidden dangers of Facebook

When Kamesh D (name changed) received a phone call from a friend asking him if he was in trouble, he was mildly surprised. The surprise turned to alarm as he learnt that his friend had received a message on Facebook, saying that he had been robbed of his mobile and money while holidaying in Paris and updating Facebook courtesy of a stranger, and asking for money to be sent to a strange account.

Kamesh was lucky. He was able to logon to Facebook, change his password and update his status, asking his friends to ignore any requests for money. Kamesh had become, for a brief period of time, a victim of the 419 scam - updated for the Facebook age.

In 1995, there were 16 million users of the internet. It took another 10 years for the number of users to hit 900 million. Facebook had a million users, in 2004, its year of incorporation. In 2006, it had 16 million users. As of April this year, the social networking site had hit 901 million users around the world, doing in six years what had taken the entire Internet a decade.

Where there are crowds, there are criminals. And it's not surprising that Facebook attracts a whole new breed of scamsters. Their objectives remain the same -- it's either money, personal information or redirection to shady schemes or page hits.

In 2009, a woman named Leanne Saylor took a Facebook quiz. You know the type "Which Star Wars character are you most like?" or "Which celebrity are you?" There are thousands of these on Facebook. Saylor took an online IQ test. On completion, she was asked to enter her mobile phone number to receive the results on her phone. She got the results - and she also got subscribed to three mobile text messaging services that ended up with an additional $44 (Rs. 2,434) on her mobile bill.
